What Perdido Key does to a window
Perdido Key is a barrier island at the Alabama line with the Gulf on the south side and Old River and Big Lagoon on the north, and the whole thing is narrow enough that every house gets salt from both directions. The Gulf-front homes and condos along Perdido Key Drive take it straight off the surf, and the houses on the Old River side and in Lost Key get it from the back when the wind comes around. After a windy week the glass goes from clear to hazy, and the big south-facing windows on the beach houses show it first.
The sand is the other problem. The white quartz sand that makes Johnson Beach and the National Seashore famous rides the wind, and it piles up in the sliding door tracks, sills and screens on every house out here. Summer storms turn it into a grit that scratches glass if it is wiped dry. Back on the mainland side, along Gulf Beach Highway and out on Innerarity Point, the water is Big Lagoon and Perdido Bay instead of the Gulf, and the live oaks and pines add pollen in spring and shade that keeps the north-facing glass damp. Irrigation on well water leaves hard mineral spots on the lower panes in the Innerarity Point subdivisions.
A monthly or every-two-months plan suits most Perdido Key homes, with the inside glass done once a year, and rental owners have us time the first clean of the year for just before spring break. Homes on Innerarity Point and along Gulf Beach Highway usually do fine on a quarterly plan. We work the key and the mainland side on their own days, know the gate procedure at Lost Key, and send a text the morning of each visit so nobody has to wait at home.
